The more pharmacists’ knowledge complements that of doctors, the greater role pharmacists can play in clinical practice. Physicians use drugs to treat disease, therefore they are always familiar with the drugs used in their specialties. Conversely, most surgeons are more interested in and focus on surgical procedures rather than medication, and irrational drug usage can be more common in surgical departments than in internal medicine departments. For that reason, surgical departments may be a place in which pharmacists might play an important role.
In 2018, the Guangdong Pharmaceutical Association (GDPA) appealed to creating surgical pharmacist positions in hospitals and defined their responsibilities as taking care of the whole process of medication management during the perioperative period and beyond, acting as a bridge between surgeons and physicians.
Surgical pharmacists play a unique role in clinical practice, so they must have a unique knowledge system, which the GDPA named “Surgical Pharmacy”. The GDPA defined Surgical Pharmacy as a specialty that studies the characteristics of surgical medication, seeks the most suitable medication therapy and addresses medication-related problems for surgical patients in order to improve clinical outcomes. Focus on perioperative medications, such as anti-infection, anti-thrombosis, analgesia, nutrition, blood sugar, blood pressure, fluid, nausea and vomiting management, and glucocorticoid use.
Many large hospitals in China now have established Surgical Pharmacist positions and Surgical Pharmacists are well accepted by both surgeons and physicians. We have designed the training course and encourage global fellow colleagues to advance the GDPA-oriented Surgical Pharmacy, Surgical Pharmacist and practice worldwide.
